If distillation is both a science and an art of extracting flavours, then the team at Martin Miller’s are truly the Da Vinci’s of the gin world. The gin, both when it was in its early stages of development and now in its production, embodies an obsession for the very best. It’s made at Langley’s Distillery in the Black Country, using traditional methods and the aid of a beautiful pot still affectionately named ‘Angela’. They separate and distil the botanicals in two individual batches whereby the earthier botanicals are distilled apart from the citrus botanicals. The two separate distillates are then combined together. This dual process gives Martin Miller’s Gin an added freshness to the citrus elements which is sometimes lacking in other gins.

Martin Miller's Gin -

At 40% ABV, Martin Miller’s has a full citrus taste, with the juniper notes emerging half way through. It has a clean soft finish which makes this gin rather enjoyable. It’s one of those gins that can be really enjoyed neat and whose fresh mineral like, crisp quality works well in a Martini.

Martin Miller's Westbourne Strength Gin -

A higher strength version of Martin Millers regular offering, the gin is made in the same way. The 45.2% Westbourne Strength has a richer, spicier feel in the mouth due to the more dominant taste of juniper at the higher percentage. There’s an added bite from the slightly higher ABV, but cassia and cinnamon also seem to more pronounced at this raised strength. It’s an interesting alternative for those who like a more assertive spirit in their drink.

Martin Miller's 9 Moons Gin -

9 Moons is the much anticipated, barrel aged variant from the Martin Miller's team. With only very, very limited quantities ever made, it's unknown if there will even be a wider release as this is a single barrel expression (with around 1,500 37.5cl bottles released globally). Even if their is a more permanent aged addition to their range using blending techniques to marry various casks, as this is a single barrel release - this 9 Moons bottling will be by its very definition, a completely unique expression.

The nose of 9 Moons has a significant nose of sweet and warming oak, with prominent vanilin aromas pouring off the glass. To taste, the cask’s effect is a lot less noticeable however – lime oil, lemon peel and the familiar soft juniper core of the original gin emerge intact. Overall the gin feels balanced and in terms of a hybrid aged product, very sympathetic to the underlying gin and to what Martin Miller’s Gin fans will be familiar with. Accessible, smooth and cunningly nuanced.
